William Penn Competes for Final Time Before Conference Tournament

Fremont, Neb.–The Statesmen women’s wrestling team got in one last competition before its league championship as it battled at the Midland Warrior Open Sunday.

Four grapplers posted two victories with 116-pounder Brittany Cotter (So., Katy, Texas, Nursing) and 130-pounder Tatiana Garcia (Fr., Amarillo, Texas, Psychology) both pinning a pair of foes.

Mami Selemani (Jr., Iowa City, Iowa, Business Management) defeated two opponents by technical fall at 123 pounds, while Payge Fuller (Fr., Plattsburg, Mo.) earned a fourth-place finish at 155 pounds with two decisions.

One fall came from both Grecia Martinez (Fr., Horizon City, Texas, Industrial Technology) at 116 pounds and Samantha Ruano (Jr., Romeoville, Ill., Business Management) at 191 pounds, while 143-pounder MayLee Edwards (So., Newton, Kan., Psychology) and 155-pounder Andrea Smith (So., Rochester, N.Y., Sociology and Political Science) each had their hands raised via technical falls.

Catherine Steinkamp (So., Quincy, Ill., Biology) and Kaylah Johnson (Fr., Houston, Texas, Biology) were victorious once as well at 116 and 155 pounds, respectively.

Next Up: William Penn returns to Oskaloosa on February 25 to host the Heart of America Athletic Conference Championship. The national qualifier begins at 9 a.m.
