Oskaloosa–The rise of Deane Wichelt (Jr., Durant, Iowa, Mechanical Engineering) to the top tier of the league’s runners has taken a nice stop at Award Land as he received his first career Midwest Collegiate Conference Men’s Cross Country Runner of the Week honor Monday.

Wichelt collected his first career accolade by leading the Statesmen at the Augustana (S.D.) Twilight last Friday. His 108th-place finish may not seem all that impressive, but considering the talent in the field from all divisions, it was. What was really head-turning was the fact his time of 21:17.95 was one minute and 39 seconds faster than when he competed on that course one year ago.

The invitational also marked the first time Wichelt led his team at an event. The award is the first for WPU this year.
