Whitehead’s Streak Earns Her POW Honor

William Penn Women's Athletics

Oskaloosa–Jennifer Whitehead (Fr., Oskaloosa, Oskaloosa HS) kept opponents off the board for over two full games last week and for her efforts she was named Midwest Collegiate Conference Softball Pitcher of the Week.

The freshman, now a two-time league honoree, helped William Penn (32-14, 13-6 MCC) to a 3-2 record last week and sole possession of the conference lead.

She pitched 18 innings over four contests and did not allow a run of any sort until the 17th frame, ending her scoreless streak at 32 innings, dating back to April 10. The streak is the longest for the Lady Statesmen program since Steph Christner (Whitehead’s current pitching coach) kept foes off the scoreboard for 33 innings in a row from April 29-May 11, 2005.

Whitehead was 3-1 last week with a 1.56 Earned Run Average. Her best feat came against Iowa Wesleyan on Thursday, throwing a two-hitter with two strikeouts.

For the year, the freshman is 18-7 with a 3.29 ERA in 153 1/3 innings of work. She has 23 complete games, eight shutouts, 86 strikeouts, and 40 walks. Opponents are hitting just .260 against her.

The award is the sixth for the William Penn softball team this spring.
