Volleyball Swept by Avila
Oskaloosa–The Statesmen volleyball team came up short in a 3-0 Heart of America Athletic Conference loss to Avila Tuesday.
WPU (4-23, 0-11 Heart), which fell by scores of 20-25, 20-25, 16-25, was outhit .153-.065.
The hosts actually owned a .258-.189 hitting edge in the opening set, but tied at 17-17, the Eagles (12-13, 3-7 Heart) went on a 4-1 run en route to taking the win.
Once again tied late in set #2 (20-20), William Penn faltered and gave up the final five points in the setback. Unfortunately, the navy and gold could not turn the tides in the final round in the sweep.
Shawni Wills (Sr., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Biology) reached double figures with 10 kills, while Rafaela Macias (Jr., Hanford, Calif., Physical Education) and Kathleen Steffen (So., Vinton, Iowa, Biology) both managed four kills.
Steffen had a nice evening, posting a double-double with 15 assists and 11 digs.
On the defensive side, Ashley Miller (So., Kalona, Iowa, Exercise Science) had 13 digs and Lilly Martinez (Sr., Oakland, Calif., Psychology) finished with three block assists.
Next Up: William Penn travels to Whiting, Ind. this weekend to compete in the Calumet-St. Joseph Tournament. On Friday, the Statesmen face host Calumet-St. Joseph at 1 p.m. and Governors State at 3 p.m. On Saturday, WPU takes on Silver Lake at 9 a.m. and Saint Mary-of-the-Woods at 11 a.m.
