Violet McMains, 91 of New Sharon passed away from natural causes on Sunday morning, November 14, 2021 at the Northern Mahaska Specialty Care in Oskaloosa.
Violet Marie McMains, the daughter of Verle and Vern (Redding) Ross, was born on June 29, 1930 in Mahaska County, Iowa.
Violet attended Beacon High School.
On August 25, 1946, Violet was united in marriage to Loren “Sparky” McMains and together they shared 58 years of marriage until his passing on January 26, 2005.
After getting married, they lived in Beacon and later moved to the family farm west of New Sharon. She worked many years at Lynn’s Hatchery in Oskaloosa, German Grocery Store in New Sharon and later worked in housekeeping at the New Sharon Care Center.
Violet was a member of JWN (Just We Neighbors) Club, and also enjoyed playing cards, traveling with her family and visiting with relatives and friends.
Violet’s memory is honored by her three daughters, Judy Smith of New Sharon, Connie (Kressie) McNew of Marion, IL and Linda (Gene) Fisher of Iowa Falls; seven grandchildren, Lory (Marty) Hay of Sully, Todd (Joy) Fisher of Iowa Falls, Renea (Randall) McNeely of Marion, IL, Amy (Rob) Poe of New Sharon, Robin (Corey) Ward of Marion, IL, Heather Thiesen and McKenzie (Jason) Schoby both of Iowa Falls; 16 great grandchildren; four great-great grandchildren; one sister, Kay Readshaw of New Sharon; one sister-in-law, Cleora Hartmann of New Sharon along many nieces, nephews and friends.
Violet was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; son-in-law, Rod Smith; Great Granddaughter, Mylee Poe; two brothers, Robert Ross, Charles (Linda) Ross; one sister, JoAnn (Chuck) Lanphier and one brother-in-law, Jack Readshaw.
Funeral services will begin at 11:00 am Thursday, November 18, 2021 at the Union Mills Christian Church.
Burial will be held in the Union Mills Cemetery at Union Mills.
Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the New Sharon Fire and Rescue or to the New Sharon McVay Family Center that will be used for the coffeetime group.
