Oskaloosa VFW and Legion members retired US Flags at a ceremony at the VFW on Tuesday night.

Oskaloosa, Iowa – With honor and respect, members of the Oskaloosa VFW and American Legion joined together on Tuesday evening to properly retire American flags.

The flags had flown as part of the ‘Avenue of Flags’, over veterans’ graves, municipal buildings, and private residences around the community.

In accordance with flag etiquette, American flags can either be buried, or disposed of in a fairly large fire of sufficient intensity to ensure complete burning of the flag.

Nearly 100 flags were collected and dropped off at the VFW. In the ceremony, held at 6pm at the Oskaloosa VFW, it took nearly an hour to completely retire the flags on hand.

After the ceremony, VFW and Legion members sat down to a meal prepared by the VFW Ladies Auxiliary.

The ‘Avenue of Flags’ used to honor veterans is in need of monetary donations. They are now several flags short, and with a cost of over $50 per flag, your help is needed in replacing the flags.

If you are interested in donating for the replacement of American flags, you can make checks payable to the Memorial Day Committee. Checks can then be brought or mailed to the American Legion Post on Memorial Day, or any other day the Post is open.
