TORREZ NABS WIN NO. 200, WARRIORS SWEEP LAKERS

Ottumwa, IA – The Indian Hills Baseball team swept Iowa Lakes Community College on Saturday to take all three games of the weekend Iowa Community College Athletic Conference (ICCAC) series with the Lakers. With the sweep, head coach Matt Torrez collected his 200th career victory at the helm of the Indian Hills program.
One day removed from a series opening victory over the Lakers, the Warriors took both ends of Saturday’s doubleheader, 14-3 and 12-5. The win pushes the Warriors’ overall record to 23-17 and 17-6 in league play. Indian Hills has now won seven consecutive contests and 14 of its last 15 outings to remain tied for first-place in the ICCAC DI Baseball standings.
In his seventh season at the helm of the program, Torrez tallied his 200th and 201st career victories on Saturday. Torrez, who spent six seasons at the helm of Trinidad State College (CO) prior to arriving in Centerville, has recorded 423 coaching victories as a head coach. Torrez becomes the fourth coach in Indian Hills Baseball history to amass 200 wins.
The Warriors powered past the Lakers in the opener, collecting 11 hits from seven different players to counterpart with an effective pitching performance. Three different players hit a home run in the game one victory – Zachari Pace (Colorado Springs, CO/Vista Ridge), Jose Lopez (Las Tablas, Panama/Springfield Commonwealth), and Jeryel Oquendo (Toa Baja, Puerto Rico/Carlos Beltran Academy). Oquendo produced a career effort in the win, tallying four RBI on a pair of hits while Lopez and Pace each tallied three RBI.
Sophomore Cole Huebner (Edmonton, Alberta/Strathcona) earned the win on the mound, striking out nine batters in 5.2 innings of work while allowing just two earned runs. Huebner, who earned his sixth victory of the year, ranks second in the ICCAC with 61 strikeouts on the year.
After failing to score in the opening inning, the Warriors plated a run in each of the next five frames to pull away from the Lakers. Indian Hills tallied 14 hits from eight different hitters in the win. The Warriors’ 7-9 batters of Eduardo Espinoza (Lecheria, Venezuela/Collegio Laura Vicuna), Oquendo, and Pace combined for six hit, four runs, and five RBI.
Lopez paced the offense in the nightcap, going 3-4 with three runs scored while sophomore AJ Marchetti (Wheeling, IL/Wheeling) scored three times. Marchetti extended his hitting streak to 11 games with a knock in both ends of Saturday’s doubleheader.
Freshman Jonah Mayoral (Littleton, CO/Heritage) earned the win on the mound with four innings of scoreless relief. Mayoral struck out a career-high six batters while allowing just one base hit. Sophomore Owen Corbett (Oswego, IL/Oswego) tossed his seventh scoreless appearance of the year, striking out a pair of batters in an inning of relief work.
The Warriors return to action Wednesday afternoon with an ICCAC doubleheader vs. Kirkwood Community College at Pat Daugherty Field. First pitch is set for 1:00 PM.
