Theodore Hynick

Oskaloosa. Theodore “Ted” Hynick, 84, of Oskaloosa, died Sunday, March 18, 2012, at the Mercy Hospital Medical Center in Des Moines. He was born August 10, 1927, at Eddyville, the son of John and Mary Sickle Hynick. He attended school at Eddyville. In August of 1945, he enlisted in the United States Navy. He was discharged from the Navy and then drafted into the Army where he served as a military police officer at Fort Rutger in Montgomery, Alabama. Following his discharge from the Army, he worked at the munitions plant in Des Moines. Later, Ted worked as a mechanic on equipment at the Lost Creek Coal mine for many years. He farmed west of Oskaloosa for many years and semi-retired in 2002. On May 9, 1959, he was united in marriage to Geraldine Jordan at Eddyville, and Geraldine passed away March 12, 2006. Ted was a very talented mechanic, and could work on any type of equipment. He earned his pilot’s license and owned several planes over the years. He enjoyed flying and airplanes, and his favorite type of plane was the Piper Cub. Ted also enjoyed fishing, mushroom hunting, camping with his kids, and traveling. He was a longtime member of St. John Lutheran Church, Oskaloosa.

His family includes his children, Debra (& Gary) Daniels of Oskaloosa, Sheryl (& Glen) Hessing of Oskaloosa, Christine (& Randall) Nunnikhoven of Oskaloosa, Barbara Shogbamimu of Leawood, Kansas, Catherine Hynick of Oskaloosa, Steven (& Marsha) Hynick of Oskaloosa, David (& Traci) Hynick of What Cheer, Connie Hynick of Oskaloosa and Charles Ryan Hynick of Oskaloosa; 18 grandchildren; 12 great grandchildren; three sisters: Lillian Carpenter, Sacramento, California, Janet Hankins, Oskaloosa, Helen Bruce of Omaha, Nebraska; and a brother: John Hynick of Oskaloosa.
Besides his wife, Ted was preceded in death by his parents; a grandson, Dustin Hynick; a brother, Charles Hynick; and three sisters: Alberta Holt, Agnes Klahn, and Emma Frederick.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 22, 2012, at 10:30 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa, with the Reverend Samuel Beltz officiating. Burial will be in the Highland Cemetery at Eddyville, with graveside military rites given by members of the Oskaloosa American Legion and V.F.W. Open visitation will begin at the Bates Funeral Chapel on Wednesday after 11 a.m. Memorials may be made to St. John Lutheran Church, Oskaloosa.
