Ten Pin Turkey Roll Supports Special Needs
Smiles were easy to find during this years ‘Ten Pin Turkey Roll’
Oskaloosa, Iowa – It can be hard for people with disabilities to get out and interact with the community. But not last Friday night, when the Christian Opportunity Center and Imagine the Possibilities hosted the 2nd annual Ten Pin Turkey Roll. CRI was at the packed Mahaska Bowl to see the difference a little bowling can make.
Whether you were there to bowl, eat, or just applaud others, the Ten Pin Turkey Roll was about one thing – showing support for people with special needs in Oskaloosa.
“They’re really not that different from us, they just got born with something,” says bowler Jessica Collins.
“We have fun here and bowl and just hang with our friends,” says Sheila Vanderveer.
Jason Klein has worked at the COC for five years. And while he may have the same attitude towards work as most of us.
“Same old, same old,” says Klein.
He says he likes his job.
The COC in Oskaloosa helps provide employment for people with disabilities. COC Public Information Director Patty Zylstra says for a person with special needs building relationships can have a big impact on their lives.
“A lot of times that’s only with the staff members that they come in contact with and we’re wanting to break down those barriers and get them more into their community like that,” says Zylstra.
Imagine the Possibilities provides housing and other support for people with special needs in Oskaloosa. Executive Director Jeff Morris says he saw the impact last year’s event had.
“What was so rewarding was to watch relationships start to form between people that we serve and members of the community,” says Morris.
And organizers hope that that connection will last a lifetime.
The event raised $5,200 for Imagine the Possibilities and the COC.
