Statesmen Winless at Loras Tourney
Dubuque–The William Penn volleyball team had a tough weekend as it finished 0-4 at the Loras Tournament Friday and Saturday.
The Statesmen (12-23) opened the weekend Friday with 3-0 losses to #23 (NCAA D-3) Wisconsin-Stevens Point (17-25, 8-25, 17-25) and Wisconsin-Oshkosh (19-25, 24-26, 19-25).
On Saturday, William Penn fell 3-0 to Wisconsin-River Falls (19-25, 19-25, 21-25) and lost 3-2 to Loras (14-25, 26-28, 25-18, 27-25, 3-15).

Kristal Campos (Jr., Lancaster, Calif., Sociology) paced the Statesmen with ten kills, while Alanna Connors (Sr., Libertyville, Ill., Biology) added seven kills.
Dayna Sammons (Jr., Menomonee Falls, Wis., Software Engineering) assisted on 17 winners, while Shawni Wills (Fr., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Biology) led her squad with nine digs. Jeanette Cunningham (Sr., Mt. Orab, Ohio, Elementary Education) posted all three of her team’s blocks (all solos).

Cunningham’s finished with seven kills and Sammons had 11 assists. Danielle Breeher (So., St. Louis, Mo., Undecided) dug 11 attacks and Sarah Stepp (So., Oakville, Mo., Undecided) served up two aces.

The Statesmen outhit the host Duhawks .173-.155, but could not finish off its rally after being down two sets to none. Cunningham, who led all players with a .481 attack clip, and Kylie Giger (So., Elkhart, Ind., Exercise Science) topped WPU with 14 kills each. Campos and Wills also reached double figures with ten winners as well.
Sammons assisted 44 times and also recorded four aces. Breeher’s 35 digs guided the defense.
Next: William Penn returns to Oskaloosa Tuesday to host Clarke in Midwest Collegiate Conference play at 7:30 p.m.
