Statesmen Win Season Finale 30-13
Oskaloosa–The William Penn wrestling team will enter postseason competition on a high after defeating Hannibal-LaGrange 30-13 in dual-meet action Thursday.
The Statesmen (2-3), who will compete next Saturday at the NAIA Central Qualifying Group Tournament in Marshall, Mo., were victorious in six matches.
After the Trojans (4-4) recorded the most-lopsided margin of the night at 125 pounds, the navy and gold ripped off four straight wins to take control.
Joao Vicente (So., East Providence, R.I., Secondary Education) got the ball rolling at 133 pounds. The sophomore appeared on his way to a dominating technical fall, but then caught Caleb McElfresh in a cradle for the fall in a time of 2:18.
Trey Busick (Fr., Pleasantville, Iowa, Industrial Technology) earned a forfeit at 141 pounds, while 149-pounder Angelo Kelly (So., Ottumwa, Iowa, Physical Education) slipped by Tyler Sonnabend 5-3.
Just as he did on Tuesday night, Christian Padilla (Jr., Tampa, Fla., Secondary Education) recorded a fast pin at 157 pounds, doing so in 57 seconds.
Hannibal-LaGrange made things interesting with three consecutive decisions to make it 21-13 as the Statesmen moved individuals up weight classes to fill the void by injured 197-pounder Kyle Soderblom (Jr., Newton, Iowa, Biology). Joe Sumner (Sr., Delaware, Ohio, Physical Education), grappling in place of Soderblom, was able to wrap up the meet for WPU by defeating Konner Braughton 7-6.
Nathan Veverka (Sr., Montezuma, Iowa, Industrial Technology) ended the night by pinning Justin Whitaker in 36 seconds. Sumner and Veverka were recognized before the meet on Senior Night.
