Statesmen Snatch First League ‘W’ on Senior Day
Oskaloosa–Alyce Correia (Fr., Perth, Australia, Elementary Education) may only be in her first collegiate season, but she is playing like the veterans that were honored Saturday as the William Penn women’s soccer team defeated Midwest Collegiate Conference foe Clarke 1-0 in overtime on Senior Day.
The Statesmen (6-10, 1-4 MCC) were outshot 19-12, but several of those opposing shots came early before the squad’s regular starters were in the game. Clarke fell to 7-9 (0-5 MCC) with the setback.
The game tightened quickly once William Penn’s regular starters walked onto the pitch. It ended up being a defensive battle with neither side finding the back of the net in regulation.
The first and only score finally came in the first overtime when Correia tapped in a long centering pass from Marci Smith (Sr., Runnells, Iowa, Biology) at the 94:55 mark. The freshman’s goal was her team-leading eighth of 2013, while Smith’s assist was her first.
Laura Gentry (Sr., Fruitland, Idaho, Physical Education) saved seven Crusader attempts for her first shutout of the fall.
