Statesmen Power Past William Woods on Senior Night

Oskaloosa–The William Penn women’s wrestling team rolled on Senior Night, defeating William Woods 40-5 in a non-conference dual meet Tuesday.

No. 6 WPU (5-5) won six of the seven contested bouts and also collected three forfeits en route to the lopsided victory over the under-manned Owls who fall to 0-9 in dual-meet competition.

After 103-pounder Lily Zapata (Fr., Lewisville, Texas, Sociology) and 110-pounder Abby Trujillo (Fr., Bakersfield, Calif., Undecided) both received forfeited wins, Christianah Ogunsanya (Fr., Akure, Nigeria, Exercise Science) took to the mat and dominated in her first home action. Ogunsanysa dropped Sophia McLain by a 10-0 technical fall at 124 pounds.

124-pounder Joanna Vanderwood (Sr., Graham, Wash., Nursing) won by the exact same 10-0 score over Amaiya McClinton, as did 131-pounder Devin Patton (Jr., Plano, Texas, Business Management) against Teani Medeiros-Maielua.

The streak was snapped at 138 pounds, but in a positive way as Kendall Bostelman (Jr., Napoleon, Ohio, Exercise Science) pinned Skylon Boone in 23 seconds, but 145-pounder Naida Abdijanovic (Jr., St. Louis, Mo., Biology) hit the resume button as she shut out Addyson Pasley 10-0.

Caitlyn Davis (Jr., Hilton Head, S.C., Business Management) added another 10-0 tech fall victory at 160 pounds, doing so in a matchup with Abby Piper.

180-pounder America Lopez (So., Val Verde, Calif., Psychology) concluded WPU’s scoring as she earned a forfeit.

The Statesmen were unfortunately denied a perfect evening as they came up short at 207 pounds.

“Tonight was an awesome night to celebrate some of the most incredible seniors,” Head Coach Jake Kadel said. “Our ladies did a really good job of going out and getting to their offense. We will use tonight as a stepping stone to prepare for our biggest dual of the year next week at Grand View.”
