Oskaloosa–Silvia Munoz (So., Paramount, Calif., Elementary Education) and Emmanuela Meneide (Sr., Turks and Caicos, Biology) each scored twice to lead the William Penn women’s soccer squad to an impressive 6-1 win over non-conference foe Benedictine-Springfield (Ill.) to close out the William Penn Classic Sunday.

The Statesmen (2-4), winners of two straight, outshot the Bulldogs 33-3 and got on the board right away when Munoz’s corner kick was connected on by Alyce Correia (Fr., Perth, Australia, Elementary Education) at the 10:38 mark. Correia has three goals in 2013.

Munoz then did it all herself just over two minutes later by curving in a corner kick that slipped by everyone into the back of the net. The sophomore again scored unassisted in the 26th minute. BU-Springfield (0-4) scored its only goal in the 40th minute. Munoz has now notched two goals with five assists for a team-best nine points.

Meneide tallied WPU’s first two second-half goals in the 48th and 65th minutes with Munoz and Correia assisting on the first success. The goals are her first of the season.

Savannah Padilla (Fr., Mesa, Ariz., Sociology), who topped the Statesmen with seven shots, wrapped up her team’s scoring with an unassisted goal at the 87:52 mark. She is tied with Correia for the squad lead in goals.

“I really thought the ladies deserved this win today,” Head Coach Willie McGowan said. “We finally showed we have the potential to score, and by scoring in a variety different ways was great to see. This team has the potential to do very well in the next few games, and with focus and hard work by the team as a whole we can perhaps realize some of that potential.”

“We worked the ball around better than we have previously and looked to be more controlled going forward,” McGowan added. “By slowing down a little, we were able to get more players forward which showed as our outside midfielders got in on the scoring act. It is great to see the ladies playing with a smile on their faces again and hopefully it will be there for some time!”

Next: William Penn remains at home Wednesday to host St. Mary (Neb.) at 3 p.m.
