Statesmen Handed First Heart Blemish by CMU
Oskaloosa–The William Penn men’s soccer squad came up short for the first time since joining the Heart of America Athletic Conference in a 3-1 loss to Central Methodist (Mo.) Saturday.
Despite outshooting the Eagles (9-1-2, 3-1 Heart) by a 9-8 tally, William Penn (7-4-1, 4-1 Heart) had its four-game winning streak snapped.
The defensive battle did not feature a goal throughout the first 45 minutes, but seven minutes into the second stanza CMU took the lead and then doubled it five minutes later.
Brad Jackson (Fr., Melbourne, Australia, Physical Education) cut the deficit in half at the 63:31 mark with Randolph Tamba (Jr., Firestone, Liberia, Information Technology) assisting. The score is Jackson’s third of 2015, while Tamba now has two helpers this fall.
Unfortunately, the navy and gold’s hopes of remaining perfect in the Heart were dashed with Central Methodist scoring its third and final goal in the 86th minute.
Max Stamer (Fr., Salzgitter, Germany, Secondary Education) tallied three saves Saturday.
“This was a tough loss for our team tonight,” Head Coach Jaymee Highcock said. “We looked solid and kept the ball well, but unfortunately could not create enough chances in the final third of the field. We lacked a little spark or piece of magic, but a 4-1 start to league play is still great.”
Next: William Penn remains in Oskaloosa next Saturday, hosting #19 MidAmerica Nazarene (Kan.) in Heart action at 3:30 p.m.
