Statesmen Grapple at Missouri Valley Duals

Marshall, Mo.–The William Penn men’s wrestling team hit the mat one final time before the holiday break as it competed at the Missouri Valley Duals Tuesday.

WPU (1-6) opened the day with a 29-17 setback to Williams Baptist (Ark.) before falling 32-24 to Lincoln (Ill.). The squad then came up short against Ottawa (Kan.) by a 31-15 tally, and ended the Duals with a 36-18 loss against Saint Mary (Kan.).

Williams Baptist 29, WPU 17

Nadhelo Charles-Pierre (Jr., Miramar, Fla., Sports Management) got the navy and gold off to a strong start at 125 pounds, dominating Ruben Whitney 20-5 for a technical fall.

Darquell Pierre (Sr., St. Petersburg, Fla., Sociology) kept it going at 133 pounds, slipping by Josh Wright 7-5. After a Statesmen loss, Joe Eads (So., Morrison, Ill., Biology) extended WPU’s lead to 14-3 with a first-period fall over Alzarius Boykins in a time of 2:13.

Unfortunately, the next four matches went to the Eagles, but 197-pounder Matthew Landsperger (Fr., Knoxville, Iowa, Sociology) kept his team in it with a 7-3 win over Christian Lewis. The heavyweight bout, however, was also claimed by WBU to close out the meet.

Lincoln 32, WPU 24

The Statesmen made it close by taking advantage of three open weights for the Lynx. 141-pounder Preston Wiest (Fr., Troutsville, Va.), 174-pounder Darwin Diaz (Fr., Pembroke Pines, Fla., Sociology), and 197-pounder Jason Beebe (So., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Business Management) all received forfeits. Eads also notched the crew’s lone contested win as he pinned Dominic Tenayuca in 40 seconds at 149 pounds.

Charles-Pierre opened the Ottawa matchup with a forfeit at 125 pounds, while Pierre pushed the advantage to 9-0 with a 7-4 decision versus Bobby Robinson at 133 pounds. Eads concluded the William Penn victories as he pinned Ryan Wahl in 1:36 at 149 pounds.
