Statesmen Fall to Wildcats, Beat Spires in Kansas
Leavenworth, Kan.–The William Penn women’s wrestling team picked up its first win since its opener as it split a pair of dual meets Thursday.
WPU (2-3, 0-3 Heart) lost 36-7 to Baker in Heart of America Athletic Conference action, but rebounded to defeat host Saint Mary in non-conference play 19-13.
Chalimar Rodriguez (Fr., Keller, Texas) got the navy and gold started against BU (4-0, 2-0 Heart) with a 8-2 victory over Kassidy Leiszler at 109 pounds.
Unfortunately, the Wildcats took control with points in the next four matches, including three forfeits against the undermanned Statesmen.
Joylynn Wegman (Fr., Keller, Texas, Psychology and Sociology) cut into the deficit with a 3-2 decision over Abbie Jones at 143 pounds, but Baker closed with three consecutive triumphs.
123-pounder Mami Selemani (Fr., Iowa City, Iowa) also notched a team point by scoring in a 13-2 technical fall setback.
In a matchup that only featured three contested bouts, Rodriguez gave WPU a jumpstart with a forfeit against USM (0-3) as well. Selemani then moved the advantage to 8-0 with a 6-0 win over Baylie Koonce.
The Spires answered back with back-to-back forfeits and a decision to go up 13-9. WPU had the final say, however, as 170-pounder Salima Omari (Fr., Iowa City, Iowa) and 191-pounder Samantha Ruano (Fr., Romeoville, Ill., Business Management) each collected a forfeit to give the Statesmen the meet victory.
