Statesmen Fall to Missouri Baptist in Road Doubleheader

St. Louis, Mo.– The William Penn softball team traveled to Missouri Baptist on Friday for a Heart of America Athletic Conference doubleheader, where the Statesmen dropped both games to the Spartans.

William Penn struggled in the opening game of the two-game set against Missouri Baptist, as the Spartans jumped out to a quick 11-0 lead through the first two innings.

The Statesmen got on the board in the top of the third inning when Laila Smith (Jr., Olympia, Wash., Elementary Education) singled up the middle to score Marin Frazee (Jr., Sioux City, Iowa, Exercise Science) for their lone run of the game.

Missouri Baptist added another run in the bottom of the fourth inning to extend its lead to 12-1 and held on from there to secure the victory in five innings.

In the game, Frazee and Tori Smith (Jr., Olympia, Wash., Secondary Education) each recorded a double for WPU.

Once again, Missouri Baptist jumped out to a commanding lead in the first two innings, taking a 6-0 advantage early in game two.

William Penn scored its only run in the top of the third inning, as Leah Conlon (Fr., Sioux City, Iowa, Exercise Science) grounded out to shortstop to bring home Laila Gutierrez (Jr., Seminole, Texas, Business Management) and put the Statesmen on the board.

Missouri Baptist added three more runs over the remainder of the game to defeat William Penn 9-1 in five innings.

Up Next: The Statesmen travel to Fulton, Mo., on Saturday to face William Woods in a Heart doubleheader beginning at 1 p.m.
