Statesmen Drop Tight Conference Match with Avila
Kansas City, Mo.–Home court advantage may have been just enough to tip the scales in favor of the host team Tuesday as the William Penn volleyball team fell 3-1 to Avila in Heart of America Athletic Conference action.
The Statesmen (5-15, 1-4 Heart) lost by scores of 24-26, 22-25, 26-24, 20-25. WPU outhit the Eagles (10-11, 1-6 Heart) by a .201-.194 margin, including a .300 clip in the third set.
Three members of the navy and gold had double figure kills as Savanna Hartman (Jr., Morgan Hill, Calif., Psychology) led the way with 18 winners and a .271 attack percentage.
Claire Simmons (Fr., Williamsburg, Iowa, Psychology) added 13 kills, while Shawni Wills (Jr., Oskaloosa, Iowa, Biology) managed a double-double with 11 kills and 12 digs.
Leyra Jusino (Sr., Bayamon, P.R., General Biology) also posted a double-double with 46 assists and 14 digs. Defensively, Ashley Miller (Fr., Kalona, Iowa, Exercise Science) had a team-high 18 digs and Alexis Weatherspoon (Fr., Kansas City, Mo., Physical Education) blocked four Avila attempts (one solo, three assists). Miller also served up half of WPU’s four aces.
