Statesmen Dominate 133-Pound Weight Class at Briar Cliff Open
Sioux City–Joao Vicente (So., East Providence, R.I., Secondary Education) and Scottie Bonds (Fr., Chicago, Ill., Physical Education) rolled through their competition to guide the William Penn wrestling team at the Briar Cliff Open Saturday.
Both Vicente and Bonds managed one win via fall and another via major decision en route to a matchup in the 133-pound finals. Vicente eventually claimed the crown as Bonds forfeited to his teammate.
Christian Padilla (Jr., Tampa, Fla., Secondary Education) was next in the line of accomplished Statesmen, going 4-2 with one fall at 157 pounds. The junior was just one win from battling for third place.
174-pounder Ishmael Rempson (Jr., Olympia Heights, Ill., Industrial Technology) also came up one win shy of fighting for the bronze as he was 2-2 with one major decision.
Charlton Benjamin (Jr., Atlanta, Ga., Sociology) won twice as well (one fall) at 157 pounds, while 149-pounder Logan Loftus (Fr., Marengo, Iowa, Industrial Technology), 165-pounder Joshua Wooten (Fr., Belleville, Mich., Physical Education), and 285-pounder Nathan Veverka (Sr., Montezuma, Iowa, Industrial Technology) all had their hands raised due to a fall.
