Six Dutch athletes awarded weekly conference honor
PELLA — Six Central College athletes were named the Iowa Conference player of the week in their respective sports Monday.
The six selections set a new school record for most athletes receiving the honor in the same week. In baseball, Matt Schissel (junior, Milan, Ill., Rock Island Alleman HS) was named pitcher of the week. Designated player Karlee Rock (senior, Wheatland, Iowa, Calamus-Wheatland HS) earned softball’s position player of the week. In track and field, Meredith Zimmerman (senior, Urbandale) was named women’s track athlete of the week and Kody Dailey (junior, Iowa City) earned men’s field athlete of the week. Desmond Stoll (senior, Lockport, N.Y.) picked up men’s golfer of the week while West Adelman (junior, Geneva, Ill.) earned men’s tennis player of the week.
Schissel shuts down Simpson— Schissel threw a complete game 3-hit shutout on the road at Simpson Tuesday in Central’s 1-0 win. Making a relief appearance in game one against Dubuque Saturday, Schissel threw four scoreless innings to earn the win with Central’s walk-off single in the 13th inning. The righthander also threw a scoreless inning of relief in an 8-7 loss to the Spartans in game two Saturday.
The Dutch (8-13, 4-6 conference) host 17th-ranked Buena Vista for a four-game series this weekend, starting at 1 p.m. Friday.
Rock powers Central to four wins—Rock added four home runs to her season total last week, including three in a doubleheader sweep of 10th-ranked Simpson Tuesday. With a solo shot in game one against Wartburg Saturday, Rock hit her 10th home run of the season, breaking Central’s single season record. Later in that game against Wartburg, Rock was intentionally walked with the bases loaded, allowing Central to take a 5-2 lead in the fifth. Rock went 7-for-11, registering a .765 batting average and 1.818 slugging percentage as Central went 4-0 on the week.
Central (23-6), 5-0 conference) returns home Wednesday at 3 p.m. for a twinbill with the University of Dubuque.
Zimmerman zooms by competition—In her first outdoor meet of the season, Zimmerman was victorious in the 100 meter hurdles at the Central Invitational Thursday. The senior set her career best in the prelims, clocking in at 14.69 seconds, before winning the finals in 14.72. Zimmerman’s previous career-best time was 15.17, run at last year’s Iowa Conference championships. Her time of 14.69 currently stands as the sixth best in Division III.
Dailey takes javelin title in home meet—The reigning Iowa Conference champion in the javelin, Dailey won the event at the Central Invitational Thursday. The junior set a career best with his toss of 187 feet, 11 inches, winning the event by a staggering 26 feet. He currently has the 17th-best distance in Division III. Dailey also finished fifth in the shot put, reaching a distance of 42-8.75.
The men’s and women’s track teams will compete in the two-day Jim Duncan Invitational on the campus of Drake University in Des Moines this weekend, starting Friday.
Stoll finishes in top 10 twice—Competing at the Webster Gorlok Spring Invitational Sunday and Monday, Stoll carded a 78-71-149 to finish in a tie for fourth. Stoll finished in sole possession of fourth place at the Illinois Wesleyan Invitational Friday and Saturday, recording a two-day score of 74-71—145.
The Central golf squad is back in action next week with the two-day Loras Invitational at Thunder Hills Country Club in Dubuque.
Adelman leads Dutch to tennis victory—Central’s men’s tennis team picked up its first Iowa Conference win of the season at Buena Vista Saturday, beating the Beavers 8-1. Adelman led the Dutch at No. 1 singles, winning 6-3, 6-1. At No. 1 doubles, Adelman partnered with Tim Kahl (senior, Grinnell) to win 8-4. Dating back to last season, Adelman has won five of his last six singles matches in conference play.
Adelman and the Dutch go for their second conference win Tuesday, hosting Wartburg at 3 p.m. at A.N. Kuyper Athletics Complex.
