Sharon Walters, 80, of Oskaloosa, passed away peacefully on March 6, 2023, at her home in Oskaloosa. Sharon Kay Walters, daughter of Norval Henry and Lorraine Luella (Mason) Graham, was born November 6, 1942, in Ottumwa, Iowa.
When Sharon was in high school, her family moved to Oskaloosa, where she graduated from Oskaloosa High School in 1960. Sharon earned her A.A. Degree from Indian Hills Community College bookkeeping in 1995.
Sharon married Richard Lancial on November 14, 1959; four children were born to this union. Richard was in the military, so Sharon moved to the numerous places he was stationed, and she cared for their children. Sharon and Richard later divorced.
In 1972, she returned to the area. Sharon married Adam Walters on August 7, 1976. They resided in What Cheer, and Sharon worked for Keokuk County in Sigourney as the General Assistance Director and CPC, positions she held for 25 years, retiring in 2003.
After Adam passed away on April 28, 2002, Sharon moved to Oskaloosa. After she retired from Keokuk County, Sharon worked part-time from 2004-2010 in the admitting department at Mahaska Health Partnership.
Later, Sharon enjoyed volunteering at the MHP Hospice Services Serenity House. She served on the Board of Directors for South Central Mental Health Center, serving as president for two terms. Sharon was a What Cheer United Methodist Church member, serving on the Administrative Council and as the Financial Secretary. She attended the Central United Methodist Church after moving to Oskaloosa in August 2002. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary and the Red Hat Ladies.
Sharon enjoyed reading, traveling, golfing, playing cards, and time with her grandchildren.
Sharon is survived by her three sons: Richard L. (& Carla) Lancial, Jr. of Oskaloosa; Jeffrey (& Colleen) Lancial of Williamsburg; and Gary (& Yoma) Lancial of Oskaloosa; a stepdaughter, Jacque (& Leo) Striegel of Harper; a sister: Leslie Nuehring of Williamsburg; six grandchildren; three step-grandchildren; one great-grandson; and several nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, Adam, Sharon was preceded in death by her mother; her stepfather, Paul Robbins; a daughter, Sandra; and a sister, Carol McDowell.
Graveside services will be held on Saturday, March 11, 2023, at the Sixteen Cemetery, near What Cheer, with Rev. Vince Homan officiating.
Memorials may be made to the Mahaska Health Hospice Serenity House, Stephens Memorial Animal Shelter, or the Oskaloosa Public Library.
Langkamp Funeral Chapel and Crematory has been entrusted with Sharon’s arrangements.
