Oskaloosa, Iowa – Smiling faces and hearts full of joy. Those are but a few goals for many people during the Christmas season, and the Mahaska County Salvation Army has donated $500 to help make that possible for Mahaska County kids. The organization will donate approximately $2000 overall to help spread the Christmas cheer.

Jerry Morrision, with the Mahaska County Salvation Army, presented Mahaska Drug with a check to help provide toys and other presents to Mahaska County kids this Christmas season. This donation is part of the ‘holiday tree’ program headed up by the Oskaloosa Police Department and SEIDA. “For the first time in 13 years, Salvation Army has had funds to be able to help with Christmas gifts.”

“We wanted to do something for kids for Christmas,” said Morrison, who said that 100 more children are in need of gifts this year over past years.

The Salvation Army is in the middle of its biggest fund-raising effort of the year, with the Red-Kettle and bell-ringers welcoming patrons to area businesses.

This year, fundraising has come in lower than expected. A bell-ringer at a kettle is important, and fewer than normal bell-ringers have signed up this year. “When you can keep all those positions (bell ringing locations) covered, man it makes a big, big difference,” added Morrison.

If you would like an opportunity to help by volunteering to bell-ring, you can call Morrison at 641.660.0173

Christmas Eve is the traditional end to the bell-ringing season, and so far, the Mahaska County Salvation Army has raised $15,000 of its $50,000 goal. Morrison said that the Virtual Kettle is available until January 27th, 2016.

Morrison said that $50,000 goal “is going to be really tough to make, but there have been miracles that have happened before.”
