Ruby A. Sterling, 84, of Rose Hill died Thursday, October 24, 2013 at Mahaska Health Partnership in Oskaloosa.

She was born Thursday, April 25, 1929 in Buffalo, Kentucky, the daughter of Arthur and Lydia Davis Shipp. After school, Ruby stayed with her parents to help raise her sister while her mother was ill.

On February 15, 1948, Ruby was united in marriage to Charles G. Sterling and he died on August 28, 1996. After marrying Chuck, Ruby’s mother became ill again and Ruby’s sister JoAnn went to live with them while she was going to school. In 1951, she and Chuck moved to Monterey, Louisiana. A few years later, Ruby’s mother passed away and her sister JoAnn went to Louisiana to live with them. In 1956, they moved to Rose Hill.

Ruby was a homemaker her whole life. She enjoyed fishing and she was an excellent cook and baker. She loved to play boards games, especially Dirty Marbles and card games. Early on she enjoyed traveling with Chuck.

Her family includes; two sons: Robert (& Barb) Sterling of Sigourney and Randy (& Barb) Sterling of Rose Hill; 5 grandchildren: Nichole Sterling of New York, Jennifer (& Peter) Krebs of New York, Kara (& Chris) Gately of Alaska, Brian (& Elisha) Sterling of Oskaloosa and Scott (& Tracie) Sterling of Rose Hill; two great grandchildren: Ezra Gately and Ashlyn Sterling ; a sister: JoAnn (& Elwood) Jordan of Cedar Rapids; a brother: Robert Shipp of Moline, Illinois; and a very special niece and nephew: Steve Jordan and Debbie Breeden.

She was preceded in death by her husband; her parents; two sisters: Hazel Safranski and Edna Henderson; and two brothers: Hoby Shipp and Billy Shipp.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, October 29, 2013 at 2:00 P.M. at the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Reverend Del Bittner officiating.
Burial will be in the Forest Cemetery in Oskaloosa.
Visitation will begin Monday after 12 noon in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will present at the funeral chapel Monday from 5 – 7 P.M. to greet friends and relatives.
