Roy Lee DeLong, age 78, of Oskaloosa, Iowa, passed away on Friday, July 14, 2023, at the MHP Serenity Hospice House in Oskaloosa. He was born on November 30, 1944, in Mahaska County, Iowa, the son of James and Colleen (Swincoe) DeLong.
Roy attended Oskaloosa High School and graduated with the Class of 1962.
On January 6, 1964, he was united in marriage to Mary Petersma at the First Christian Church in Oskaloosa. To this union, two sons were born, John and James.
Roy worked with his father as a coal miner in his younger years. Later he took a job as an over the road truck driver for Shinn Trucking until retiring in 2015 at the age of 71.
Roy and Mary enjoyed taking trips to the casino.
His family includes his wife, Mary DeLong of Oskaloosa; his children, John (& Susan) DeLong of Dayton, Texas and James (& Joni) DeLong of Oskaloosa, Iowa; his grandchildren: Josh (& Katherine) DeLong, Nash DeLong, Amber (& Brett) DeBruin, Tanner DeLong and Austin DeLong; 7 great grandchildren; his father, James DeLong; 5 siblings: Tom (& Linda) DeLong, Cheryl (& Kevin) Cox, Patricia, Cathy, and Robin (& Tim) Brayton.
He was preceded in death by his mother; and paternal and maternal grandparents.
As was Roy’s wish, his body will be cremated and there are no services planned at this time. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
