Rose Shafer, age 93, passed away at Crystal Heights Care Center in Oskaloosa on
Sunday, May 14, 2023. She was born on December 7, 1929, in Mahaska County, the daughter of Harold and Velma Harkins: She was united in marriage to Frank Shafer on August 22, 1955, in Camdenton Missouri. They spent 24 years together.
She was employed over the years by Lynns Poultry, Pella Rollscreen, Checkerboard Café, and
Oskaloosa Food Products, and she received her certificate of nurse aid as she celebrated her
60th birthday.

Rose spent her time enjoying singles and doubles bowling leagues, she even had an appearance on a tv program “Let’s Go Bowling”. She was also a 4-H leader and a member of the Red Hat Society. A few of her favorite things were westerns, elephants, Elvis, and her dear friends. She devoted most of her time to spending time with her kids and grandkids. Her sense of humor was loved by many. Later in life, she was fortunate to have a loving companion, Cor Van Egmond.

Her family includes her four kids: Jack Shafer, Rosanne Shafer, Peggy (& Jeff) Bailey, and Teddy (& C.J) Shafer; Seven
grandchildren: Danyell, Christopher, Dolly, Crystal, Alex, Colton, and Carrissa; Eight great-grandchildren: Kristina, Ariel, Maelily, Cheyenne, Ella, Melvin, Charlotte, and Dale, with one-sharing her birthday; One great-great-grandchild, Devon, totaling five generations.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Frank; and her companion Cor Van Egmond.

Graveside services will be Saturday, May 20, 2023, at 10:00 AM at the Old White Cemetery with Pastor Mike Dotson officiating.
As was Rose’s wish, her body has been cremated. Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of arrangements.
