Richard Wesley Ryder, 79, of Sigourney and formerly of Ollie, passed away November 1, 2021, at the University of Iowa Hospital in Iowa City. He was born December 31, 1941, in Iowa City, Iowa, the son of Lloyd and Dorothy Lothridge Ryder.

Richard drove truck for many companies in the area including Ben Young Trucking in Richland, Haupert Livestock in Fairfield, and Kaiser Rock Quarry in Ollie. He also worked for his good friend C.D. Huffman at the farm and the sale barn.
Throughout his life he was “given” several nicknames, all of which he answered to with a smile they are: Jum, Jumbo, Tiny, Dick, and then Richard. He loved visiting with people and never knew a stranger. He enjoyed the freedom his electric scooter granted him. There is a good chance you saw him scooting around town enjoying the fresh air and scenery. He always had time to stop and visit with people that were out and about. He truly loved the small communities he lived in throughout his life. Richard cherished the relationships that he had with the people in those communities. He lived in several apartments throughout the years until entering Sigourney Care Center due to failing health.
He is survived by his son, Wesley (& Michelle) Ryder of Ottumwa; three grandchildren: Kelsy Ryder, Benjamin (& Cassie) Ryder, and Gage Ryder; a great granddaughter, Emma; his brother, James Ryder; and his close friends, CD and Carol Huffman.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and a brother, Donald Ryder.
A graveside memorial service will be held Friday, November 5, 2021, at 11:00 a.m. in the Ollie Cemetery at Ollie.
As was Richard’s wish his body has been cremated. The Fremont Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
