Oskaloosa, Iowa – Kevin Peterson, Oskaloosa High School Athletic Director and Sherry Vavra, Director of Mahaska Community Recreation Foundation (MCRF), were flooded with donations toward the Play It Forward athletic equipment exchange program at the Old Shoe Game. Play It Forward, sponsored by MCRF, is a aimed at promoting more youth involvement in recreation activities.
“People were thrilled about the introduction of the program. All night the consistent message from the community was great idea!” said Vavra. “It’s a great way for families to clear out unused athletic equipment, which we’ll make available for other kids to use as they get involved in area sports programs.”
“We collected 106 items including 58 pairs of shoes,” said Peterson. “Not only do the items have a lot of life left in them, some still had the tags on. I was proud to see the Oskaloosa Community so involved and have such interest in the program.”
Opportunities to donate or pick-up equipment will occur during registration for individual sports. Items accepted include: football cleats and jerseys, softball/baseball cleats, bats, gloves, pants, safety equipment, sliding pads, soccer cleats, jerseys, shin guards and shorts and track spikes.
