NEWTON, IA — The Oskaloosa varsity boys’ bowling team clinched second place in the Newton Invitational this weekend. Competing against seven other schools, the Osky boys demonstrated their strong start to the season, trailing only behind Waukee in the final standings.

Leading the charge for Oskaloosa was Trey VanWyk, who emerged victorious in the individual competition. VanWyk showcased exceptional bowling prowess, scoring a total of 495 pins over two games. His scores of 269 and 226 earned him the top spot in individual rankings and significantly contributed to the team’s overall success.

Jacob Schutz also made a notable contribution to the Oskaloosa team, securing fourth place in the individual standings. Schutz’s consistent performance, with scores of 249 and 192, amounted to a 441 series, further bolstering the team’s position.

On the girls’ side, the Oskaloosa team faced challenges at the Newton lanes, ultimately finishing in seventh place. Despite the team’s overall struggles, individual performances shone through, particularly from Kaylee Haugen. Haugen stood out with a commendable effort, finishing fourth in the individual competition. She scored a total of 345 pins across two games, with scores of 165 and 180, marking a strong individual showing.

The boys’ team, with their second-place finish, and the standout performances from both VanWyk and Schutz, display a robust competitive edge. Meanwhile, Haugen’s resilience and skill underpin the potential for the girls’ team to rebound in upcoming events.
