Oskaloosa School Board Discusses Student Behavior, Finance, and Facility Improvements
The Oskaloosa School Board met on Tuesday, February 11, 2025, addressing key topics ranging from student behavior and facility improvements to finance and academic planning. The meeting included presentations from district staff, public comments from community members, and discussions on ongoing projects and funding initiatives.
Facilities: Middle School Roof and Instructional Support Levy
The board conducted two public hearings during the meeting. The first focused on the Oskaloosa Middle School (OMS) roof replacement project, where staff and community members stressed the urgent need for repairs. One teacher noted that gym classes had been disrupted due to roof leaks, further underscoring the importance of addressing the issue.
The second hearing discussed the Instructional Support Levy, which is set to expire in the 2025-2026 fiscal year. The district seeks to renew the levy, which provides approximately $1.2 million annually for teacher salaries, benefits, and general fund expenses. No public objections were raised regarding the levy renewal.
Academic Planning and Career Readiness
Oskaloosa’s counseling team presented updates on the district’s Career and Academic Planning (DCAP), which ensures students receive guidance and support in their post-secondary goals. Beginning in eighth grade, students explore career interests, complete skill assessments, and learn about vocational opportunities.
At the high school level, students have access to career readiness resources, including college visits, apprenticeship programs, resume writing workshops, and work-based learning experiences. The district uses Xello, a career development software, to help students align their coursework with career pathways.
Strength and Conditioning Program Expansion
Oskaloosa’s strength and conditioning program has grown significantly, with over 300 students from grades 8-12 participating in weight training and athletic development. The program, implemented into PE classes, allows student-athletes to train during the school day rather than outside of regular hours.
The board was also presented with data showing measurable improvements in students’ strength, speed, and agility, demonstrating the program’s impact. Coaches emphasized their goal of expanding the initiative and aligning middle school and high school training regimens to better prepare younger athletes.
Finance Report: Enrollment and Open Enrollment Trends
The finance report highlighted trends in student enrollment and open enrollment numbers. The district’s open enrollment out rate has declined, indicating more students are choosing to stay within the district. However, open enrollment in (students transferring from other districts into Oskaloosa) has also decreased, slightly impacting funding.
Despite these fluctuations, the board expressed optimism about maintaining a strong financial outlook, particularly with the renewal of the instructional support levy.
Other Business and Upcoming Events
The board reviewed upcoming events, including the Oskaloosa High School musical, “Mary Poppins,” scheduled for February 28 – March 2. The production involves a large number of students, showcasing both on-stage talent and behind-the-scenes contributions.
