Oskaloosa High School held its annual Veterans Day assembly on November 11, honoring those who have served in the United States Armed Forces. The event brought together students from both the high school and middle school, staff members, and community guests in a show of gratitude and respect for local veterans.
The program began with the presentation of the flag, the Pledge of Allegiance, and a performance of the national anthem by the school choir. Class officers from each grade led the assembly, asking all veterans in attendance to stand and be recognized. Those planning to enter military service after graduation were also honored.
A video presentation followed, highlighting the history and meaning of Veterans Day. Students shared essays written for the occasion, each reflecting on the themes of courage, sacrifice, loyalty, and freedom. The essays expressed appreciation for the selflessness of veterans and the lessons their service teaches future generations.
The school band performed a medley of military branch songs, inviting those who served in each branch to stand as their anthem played. The gesture received a strong response from the audience, underscoring the pride and unity felt throughout the gymnasium.
Guest speaker Kim Dixon, an Oskaloosa High School graduate and current American Legion Auxiliary Department of Iowa President, spoke about the deeper meaning of Veterans Day. She emphasized that the freedoms enjoyed today were earned through dedication and sacrifice, and encouraged students to honor veterans through their actions and values in everyday life.
The ceremony concluded with a moment of silence to remember those who lost their lives in service to the nation. The sound of taps echoed through the gym, followed by an invitation for veterans and their families to join a reception hosted by the student council.
