Oskaloosa Girls Wrestlers Open Season With Three Top-Four Finishes at Sigourney

The Oskaloosa girls wrestling team opened its season on the road Tuesday night, turning in a strong showing at the Sigourney-Keota Girls Tournament.

Facing a field of 25 teams and bringing only half of its roster due to other conflicts, Oskaloosa still made its presence felt. All three Indians who competed finished in the top four of their weight classes, setting a solid tone for the season’s first outing.

At 115 pounds, Alyssa Sheets went 3–1 on the night and placed third. Sheets started fast with back-to-back pins, winning by fall over Raya Nebergall of Lone Tree in the opening round and then over Emorry Davis of WACO in the quarterfinals. Her only setback came in the semifinals, where she was pinned by Newton’s Kylee Adams. Sheets bounced back in the third-place match, earning a 9–6 decision over Alivia Garcia of West Liberty to secure the podium finish.

In the 140-pound bracket, Mia Luck also finished third with a 2–1 record. After receiving a first-round bye, Luck needed less than a minute to record her first win, pinning Lakeyn Stubbs of Grinnell in just 45 seconds in the quarterfinals. She ran into an undefeated opponent in the semifinals, falling by technical fall to North Mahaska’s Macie Little. Luck responded in the third-place match with another pin, putting Alina Mallie of Lisbon on her back in 1:37.

At 190 pounds, Kadence Briggs battled her way to a fourth-place finish. Briggs opened her tournament with a pin over Lilly Fuchs of Newton in the quarterfinals. She then dropped her semifinal match by fall to Ellie Callahan of Mid-Prairie and later fell by technical fall to Leticia Henriquez of Clear Creek Amana in the third-place match, closing the night with an official 1–2 record but valuable early-season experience.

Even with a short-handed lineup, Oskaloosa’s three placewinners combined for 45 team points at Sigourney, a promising sign for a program looking to build depth and momentum as the season unfolds.

The Indians will be back on the mat Saturday at the BGM tournament as they continue their early-season schedule and look to get more wrestlers into competition.
