Oskaloosa Elementary Recruiting Iowa Reading Corps AmeriCorps Members!
Oskaloosa, Iowa – In partnership with the United Way of Mahaska County, the Iowa Reading Corps AmeriCorps Program will launch at Oskaloosa Elementary in October. Iowa Reading Corps is a statewide initiative, led by United Ways of Iowa, to help ensure that all Iowa students are on track to read at grade level by the end of third grade. The program places AmeriCorps members, trained as Elementary Literacy Tutors, at schools across Iowa to provide tutoring for students who are just below proficiency in reading. As an inaugural Reading Corps school, Oskaloosa Elementary is currently recruiting three AmeriCorps members to serve as full-time literacy tutors.
Iowa Reading Corps AmeriCorps members at Oskaloosa Elementary will work one-on-one with students in kindergarten through 3rd grade who need help learning to read. Terms of service will begin in late September and will end by July 31, 2014. During the summer months, members will also have the opportunity to partner with the United Way of Mahaska County to coordinate literacy-based programming. In return for their service, AmeriCorps members receive a living stipend, an education award of up to $5,550 to use for previous or future education expenses, and other benefits.
For individuals pursuing or continuing an education career, the hands-on experience and literacy training offered by Iowa Reading Corps provides members with an invaluable stepping stone into the field. Not pursuing an education career, but looking to make a difference? Iowa Reading Corps also builds essential career skills, promotes personal and professional growth, and highlights members’ commitment to community service. There is no upper age limit to serve as an AmeriCorps member and a degree in education or teaching is not required.
