The Oskaloosa City Band will kick off its 149th season on Thursday, June 6. Under the direction of Bruce Peiffer, the band will perform weekly concerts each Thursday at 8 p.m. on the historic bandstand. After some repairs, it appears the bandstand is ready for another season of music on the square. Invite your friends and neighbors, bring your favorite lawn chair (or sit on one of the park benches), bring a jacket, and enjoy one of Oskaloosa’s finest summer traditions.
The band will be debuting a new piece this week, dedicated to Oskaloosa Municipal Band Trumpeter Carolyn Brickley. A long time member of the band, Carolyn has always enjoyed westerns and this piece combines the themes from two John Wayne classics (The Comancheros and The Sons of Katie Elder) into a “fiery overture based on a western theme.”
Soloist, Andrea Dursky will be featured in “June Is Bustin’ Out All Over” and “If I Loved You,” both from Rodgers and Hammerstein’s “Carousel.”
The band will also play a theme song from a popular television series that aired from 1968 to 1980 and returned in 2010. Can you guess the show? The answer will be revealed on Thursday! Hope to see all of you at this week’s performance!
For additional updates throughout the summer, you can “like” the band on Facebook (Oskaloosa City Band Fan Page) or follow the band on Twitter (Osky_City_Band).
In the event of inclement weather, concerts will be canceled. Tune into KBOE, or check Facebook and Twitter for weather related announcements.
