Oskaloosa City Band Concert Information for June 13, 2013
The Oskaloosa City Band’s next concert is Thursday, June 13 at 8 p.m. on the Oskaloosa City Square. The band will play marches by Karl King and John Philip Sousa.
The younger crowd members may recognize a few songs this week as the band plays “Colors of The Wind” from the Disney production of “Pocahontas”. Songs from the 1970’s that are still popular include “Brown Eyed Girl” by Van Morrison and “Sweet Caroline” by Neil Diamond.
The more “seasoned” crowd members will recognize a jazz piece written by Cole Porter and recorded in 1938. “Begin the Beguine” is still an often played tune among jazz musicians.
This week, we feature the low instruments in one of their favorite pieces, “Them Basses”. The band’s sizable tuba section enjoys their opportunity to play the melody on this tune.
The band will play a piece that won a Grammy Award for Record of the Year and was the first movie theme to ever win this award. Can you guess it? Come to the concert on Thursday night to learn the answer and hear this beautiful song.
Each week, the band plays a special song for birthday and anniversary celebrations. If you have someone you would like to recognize on Thursday night, hand a note to the director or another band member before the concert.
RAGBRAI t-shirts will be for sale again this week. If you missed out last week, you can purchase yours Thursday night.
Refreshments will be provided by First National Bank Midwest (popcorn), Hawkeye Real Estate (beverages), and Oskaloosa Sno Biz (sno biz frozen treats).
We’re all hoping for a beautiful evening, however, tune into KBOE radio or Facebook (Oskaloosa City Band Fan Page or Oskaloosa News) for details if there are any weather related announcements.
