Oskaloosa 8th Grade Girls Overtake Newton
This past Thursday the 8th grade girls got back into the winning column by beating a competitive Newton team by the score of 27-18. The girls were down at halftime but after the usual “wake up call” the girls began playing as a team. The rebounding totals were not as high this week which could be a result of a higher shooting percentage or not getting after the offensive glass. Winning is contagious and so is the display of high effort from each individual athlete. Makenna Schaffner does not put up high statistical numbers but she was a great spark to have back in the lineup. The girls will continue to improve this next week and look forward to a season ending game against Pella High.
Stats:
Maddie Haines: 5 points and 2 assists
Ellie Henry: 2 points and 1 assist
Emily Simon: 4 points, 2 assists and 4 rebounds
Kaylee Johnson: 9 points and 3 assists
Jillian Jennings: 7 points, 2 assists and 3 rebounds
Makenna Schaffner: 3 rebounds and 3 assists
The B team came out shooting cold and turned the ball over many times. It has been a great deal of time since these girls last played and it showed in their final score of 12-2. The girls had high quality looks at the basket but could not find the bottom of the net. Our 1 and only bucket came in the final period from Abby Vroegh. The girls forced a surplus amount of turnovers but could not make Newton pay for them. These girls are continuously behind each other and want the best for their teammates. This always makes Coach Knoot and I very pleased with their unselfish mindset. We all look to finish the season strong and most importantly, Go Indians!
