Optimists celebrate with sixth graders

Oskaloosa, Iowa – Oskaloosa Optimists celebrated the end of the first trimester by honoring two students as the Optimist Students of the Trimester. Each trimester the club honors a boy and girl from grades sixth, seventh or eighth.
Kirby Nelson and Josh Stoneberg were given the award from the sixth grade. They were joined by family and Optimist members for a breakfast at Smokey Row on December 5.
“These are just two of our wonderful students we have at the middle school,” said Andy Hotek, Optimist member and principal at the school. “We had 26 students nominated for the award.”
Teachers and staff at the school nominate students, then the administrative staff make the selection for the club. The students received plaques for their achievement.
Other students nominated included, Cade Snakenberg, Aleia Cheney, Coy Snakenberg, Sydney Sarver, Joe Schipper, Ebru Bayram, John Edgren, Ellie Snyder, Arawen Hodgkins, Grace Ver Steegh, Nick Dykstra, Emily Lunsford, Austin Spencer, Brook Engelhart, Clayton VandenBerg, Emma Raymond, Raj Desai, Lindsey Holmberg, Zach Salevsky, Joanna Thury, Brandon Salevsky, Kennedy Pierson, Makayla McQueen, and Molly Pettyjohn.
Optimist Club President Andrea Brownlee and Hotek made the presentations following the breakfast meeting.
