Oskaloosa, Iowa – Helping families and kids have a more stress free first day of school is just one of the many positives that comes from Operation Backpack. Buying school supplies can be stressful for a family with limited resources, but with the assistance of some local non-profits, that day might just be a bit more enjoyable.
The backpacks are all stocked and ready to go, all 241 of them set to help some student make the most of their school year.
On Tuesday, the four area agencies, SEIDA, Love Inc, United Way and The Salvation Army, involved in Operation Backpack gathered at the United Way building to help showcase the final product that the many donors, volunteers and area businesses had worked hard to accomplish. With everyone’s help they were able to reach their goal.
Monday through Thursday the backpacks were being passed out, says Jerry Morrison of Mahaska County Salvation Army. Morrison says that next week, the Salvation Army will be handing out 60 backpacks to families that turned in applications after the deadline of July 13.
If you missed the deadline for Operation Backpack, you can give the Mahaska County Salvation Army a call at 641-295-0942 or 641-660-0173.
