Norma Jean Wells, 79 of Newton and formerly of New Sharon passed away Tuesday, September 14, 2010 at the Skiff Medical Center in the Monarch Wing in Newton. Funeral services will begin at 11:00 am Friday, September 17, 2010 at the Union Mills Christian Church with Pastor Kerry Lake officiating. Visitation with the family present will be from 6:00 to 8:00 Thursday, September 16, 2010 at the Harden Funeral Home in New Sharon. Interment will be held in the Union Mills Cemetery at Union Mills. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be directed to the family of Norma.

Norma Jean Wells, daughter of Henry and Rachel (Carver) Hites was born on November 10, 1930 in Union Mills, Iowa. She attended school in the Barnes City and New Sharon areas. Norma Jean married Thomas Johnston in 1955. To this union six children were born, Gary, Terry, Jerry, Raymond, Cynthia and Deanna. After her children were raised, Norma Jean went to work for the New Sharon Care Center for 13 years as a CNA. She was an animal lover. She loved camping, fishing, crocheting and gardening. Norma was a member of the Union Mills Christian Church, the VFW, Moose Lodge, Eagles Club and the American Legion Auxiliary.

Her memory is honored by her five children, Gary (Nola Whiten) Johnston of Des Moines, Jerry (Kelly) Johnston of Newton, Raymond Johnston of New Sharon, Cynthia (Bill Des Planque) Casper of Newton and Deanna (John) Fisk of New Sharon; one sister, Barbara (Jim) Klein of Minnesota, 18 grandchildren, 8 great grandchildren and her companion, RJ.

Norma Jean was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Thomas Johnston; a son, Terry Johnston; a brother, Jack Hites and a sister, Henretta McGinn.
