Margaret Lawrence
Margaret Lawrence, 100, of Rock Island, Illinois and formerly of Oskaloosa, died Wednesday, May 30, 2012, at Saint Anthony’s Nursing Home in Rock Island. She was born May 12, 1912, in Oskaloosa the daughter of Carl and Margaret Donnelly Finley. She graduated from the Oskaloosa High School and William Penn College. She completed her training to become a Registered Nurse at Iowa Methodist in Des Moines. On July 2, 1942, she was united in marriage to Orville K. Lawrence at Charleston, Arkansas; Orville died December 31, 1987. She served in the Army with the Nurse Corps during WWII, and was discharged as a 2nd Lieutenant. Upon being discharged she went to work as a nurse at the hospital in Winterset. She and Orville moved to Oskaloosa and Margaret began working at the Mahaska Hospital as a Registered Nurse. Following her retirement, she worked part time at the Mahaska Manor in Oskaloosa. She moved to Rock Island, Illinois to be closer to her son. She enjoyed quilting.
Her family includes her two children, Michael (& Sherry) Lawrence of Rock Island, Illinois, and Margaret Lawrence of Iowa City; a granddaughter, Summer Lawrence; and a brother, Carl Finley of Tombstone, Arizona.
In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Marcella Martin and Rosemary Jones; and a brother, James Finley.
Funeral services will be held Monday, June 4, 2012, at 1:00 p.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel in Oskaloosa with Reverend Mike Omundson officiating. Burial will be in the Forest Cemetery with graveside Military Rites given by members of the Oskaloosa American Legion and V.F.W. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements. Visitation will begin Monday morning after 10 a.m. in the Bates Funeral Chapel and the family will be at the Bates Funeral Chapel from noon until service time at 1p.m. to greet friends and relatives.
