The Director for the Agency on Aging said the money would make a big difference.
On Friday, Mahaska County Outreach Store Manager Alice Moore presented Cheryl Brown, Director for Agency on Aging, a check for $554.75. The check was the full amount raised through the April sack sale conducted by the County Outreach store.
The store has been doing the monthly sack sale to celebrate the County Outreach’s 30th anniversary. For seven dollars, customers get a sack and fill it with whatever they can. All the money goes to an organization chosen by the Board of the Outreach.
The next sack sale is Friday, May 31st and will benefit the “End of the Month Meals.” The president of the Mahaska County Outreach explains that the beneficiary of the sack sale is chosen by the Board after receiving nominations from the community and Board members. Priority is given to those organizations that primarily serve the Mahaska County area.
Cheryl Brown said that the Agency on Aging provides an average of 160 meals per day to seniors in the area. All are welcome to have lunch at the center offered at 11:45 every day. Those over 60 only need to pay on a donation basis, but those under 60 will pay a small fee that Cheryl says is “comparable to the fast food restaurants in town.” 2013 marks the organization’s 40th year of serving the community.
Alice Moore says she and the volunteers feel good helping local organizations. The store is open Monday through Saturday and is always open to the public.
