Lyle Roovaart, 87 of rural Barnes City, passed away Friday, February 25, 2022 at his home. Lyle Wayne Roovaart was born on January 17, 1935 on the family farm near Taintor, Iowa.
Lyle attended Success Country School near Taintor before moving to the Browntown area where he attended country school. He graduated from Montezuma High School in 1953.
Lyle began farming in 1953 on the farm he was born on near Taintor, Iowa. In 1959, he moved back to the farm in the Browntown area where he continued to farm.
On May 27, 1956, Lyle was united in marriage to Betty Phipps in the Barnes City Christian Church. To this union four children were born, Marvin, Lila, Randall and Twila. They later divorced.
Lyle was then married to Doris Holtkamp at the New Sharon Friends Church on September 1, 1979. Doris died on April 22, 2012.
After Doris’ death, Lyle was married to Mary Beth Lindall at the New Sharon Friends Church.
Lyle was a lifelong farmer and loved life on the farm. He also worked at Pella Corp. from 1993 to 2002 at night while he farmed.
Lyle had a passion for genealogy and spent many hours at the New Sharon Historical Society. Lyle enjoyed taking rides in his truck and rides in his 1970 Mercury Grand Marquis. He also enjoyed getting ice cream, Allis Chambers tractors and just tinkering on the farm. He was a member of the New Sharon Friends Church and served on the church board many times over the years.
His legacy will be honored by his children: Lila (& Pat) Fusaro of Des Moines, Randy (& Michelle) Roovaart of Des Moines, Twila (& John) Thompson of Montezuma; Deborah (& Don) Horton of Fort Madison, Donna Knox of Fort Madison, Steve (& Marlene) Holtkamp of Irving, TX, Stanley (& Barbara) Holtkamp of Irving, TX, Denise Peacock of New Sharon, Deanna (& Richard) Rankin of Irving, TX, Sherri (& Howard) Ledford of Rock Springs, GA, Kevin Lindahl of Poplar Grove, IL and Kimberly (& Jim) Anderson of Greenfield, WI; 36 grandchildren; 54 great grandchildren; eight great-great grandchildren; a brother, Leonard (& Carol) Roovaart of Bondurant; and many other relatives and friends.
Lyle was preceded in death by two wives, Doris Roovaart and Mary Lindahl; two sons, Marvin Roovaart and Scott Holtkamp; two daughters-in-law, Cindy Roovaart and Barbara Lindahl; and a son-in-law, Moe Peacock.
Funeral services will begin at 10:30 an Friday, March 4, 2022 at the Lighthouse Church in New Sharon.
Burial will be held in the Union Mills Cemetery.
Visitation will be held one hour before the service at the church.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the New Sharon Historical Society.
