Live Healthy Hike – Geocaching on the Recreation Trail
Oskaloosa, Iowa – The third Saturday walk for this month, scheduled for May 19, will be held at Edmundson Park. Dave Sedivec of the Mahaska County Conservation Board stated, “We will meet at the Babe Ruth parking lot at 9:00 am. This event will feature an introduction to geocaching, which is a high tech form of a scavenger hunt. ‘Caches’ are small hidden containers that are found with the aid of a GPS (global positioning system) unit or a GPS enabled smart phone.” Dave went on to explain there are seven caches hidden at Edmundson Park, and a total of 88 hidden within a five mile radius of Oskaloosa. Many caches are hidden in public areas and along the recreation trail.
At this event, which is co-sponsored by the Mahaska Wellness Coalition and the Mahaska County Conservation Board, geocaching basics will be covered for both GPS units and smart phone applications. There will be twelve GPS units available to use for the event, or you can bring your own. While in the park searching for caches you will be near the golf course, disc golf, ball diamonds, swimming pool, the recreation trail, playground, historical sites and maybe a pond.
Please come out and join others for a fun morning with a new sport and enjoy all that the park has to offer. For more information contact the MCCB at 641.673.9327.
