Lewis, Danna Sweep League Honors
Oskaloosa–The Lady Statesmen softball team built some momentum during its spring break trip and two team members were applauded for their efforts in the cause as the Midwest Collegiate Conference weekly honors were announced today.
Outfielder Khyia Lewis (Sr., Ottumwa, Ottumwa HS) was named Player of the Week, while Nicole Danna (Jr., Boone, Iowa Central CC) garnered the Pitcher of the Week laurel. The award is Lewis’ second (first since 2010), while Danna is a first-time honoree.
The pair led William Penn (10-8) to a 9-3 week, including five consecutive wins at the end.
Lewis hit .421 (16-of-38) during the stretch, including four home runs and five doubles. The senior scored 17 runs with 13 RBIs.
She recorded a season-high three hits against Great Falls (Mont.) on Monday, but had her best showing Thursday against Aquinas (Mich.), going 2-for-5 (2B, HR) with five RBIs and a run.
For the year, Lewis is hitting .333 (17-of-51) with team-bests in doubles (5), home runs (4), runs (18), total bases (34), and walks (7). She has also produced 16 RBIs (second on team).
Danna was a perfect 4-0 last week, including a one-hit shutout against Northwestern Friday. She struck out a week-high 12 against Cornerstone (Mich.) Tuesday as well. The junior finished with 35 strikeouts against ten walks in 24 innings of work.
For the year, Danna is 5-1 with a 3.20 Earned Run Average in 35 innings. She has four complete games, two shutouts, 51 strikeouts, and 13 walks. Opponents are hitting .232 against her.
The awards are the first two for the program this year.
