Lavoe DeJong, 93 of New Sharon passed away Wednesday, July 8, 2020 at the Northern Mahaska Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. Lavoe O. DeJong, the daughter of Harrison and Margaret (Stephens) VerSteegh, was born on September 24, 1926 on the VerSteegh family farm outside of New Sharon.
Lavoe graduated from New Sharon High School at age 16 in 1943.
On June 4, 1944, Lavoe was united in marriage to Paul DeJong. To this union three sons were born, Monty Ray, Wavern and Norman.
Together they farmed in the Taintor area where Lavoe was very active helping out on the farm and raising their three sons. When the boys were a little older, she worked as a receptionist for Dr. Phelps in New Sharon.
camped over 30 years at the Iowa State Fair and was a volunteer at the United Methodist Church Tent at the fair for several years. She had a beautiful flower garden and was very particular with her yard. Lavoe was a wonderful mother, grandmother and great grandmother and was very involved in her grandchildren’s activities. She always looked forward to her family dinners she held on the last Sunday of the month and having the most beautiful Christmas decorations and lights every year. Lavoe loved Jesus and was very active in the New Sharon United Methodist Church where she taught Sunday School and held a weekly prayer group. She was also a member of United Methodist Women, Faith Circle, New Sharon Garden Club where she loved to enter her roses in Spring Festival.
Her memory will be cherished by her children, Monty (friend, Linda Specher) DeJong of Montezuma, Wavern (& Judy) DeJong of Zearing and Norman (& Norma) DeJong of Independence; her eight grandchildren: Rachelle (& Bob) Stewart, Lori (& Brian) Blomme, Kari (& Terry) Vannoy, Cory (& Holly) DeJong, Shawn (& Tonya) DeJong, Wendy DeJong, Jessica (& Mike) Rippel and Brandon (& Savanna) DeJong; 15 great grandchildren; and many nieces, nephews and friends.
Lavoe was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Paul in 1975; her brother and sister-in-law, Jim (& Helen) VerSteegh and two nephews, Steven VerSteegh and Jeffry VerSteegh along with a still born nephew, Benjamin.
Funeral service will begin at 11:00 am Saturday, July 11, 2020 at the Holland-Coble Funeral Home in New Sharon.
Burial will be held in the Friends Cemetery in New Sharon. Holland-Coble Funeral Home of New Sharon is in charge of arrangements.
Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service.
In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the New Sharon United Methodist Church or the Blue Ribbon Foundation at the Iowa State Fair.
