Oskaloosa–Former Statesmen baseball pitcher Corey Lathram has extended his career past college as he recently signed a contract to play professionally in the Southwest.

Lathram inked a contract with the Roswell Invaders, a Pecos League franchise out of Roswell, N.M. The Pecos League is an independent league consisting of teams from New Mexico, Arizona, Texas, and Colorado.

Players in the league are 25 years old and younger. The regular season runs from May 19-July 28 and Lathram is set to report to camp in early May.

“I am excited to keep playing; you never know when you will no longer be able to play the sport you love,” Lathram said. “I am going down there with hopes of having a good season and that it will help me get signed by a Major League organization. Hopefully I can turn this into something long term.”

Lathram had an impressive two-year career at William Penn, highlighted by going 5-2 with a 2.91 Earned Run Average over 20 appearances as a junior in 2013. He earned first-team all-Midwest Collegiate Conference honors for his efforts that spring.

“Corey had a great career for us, particularly during the 2013 season with 20 appearances,” William Penn Head Coach Mike Laird said. “Without his consistent pitching and leadership, we would not have won the MCC title that year.”
