Larry Surfus, 71, of Oskaloosa, died Sunday, June 1, 2014, at his home in Oskaloosa. He was born April 18, 1943, in Des Moines, Iowa, the son of Claire and Lucy Surbaugh Surfus.

Larry graduated from Mormon Trail High School with the class of 1961. Following graduation he drove a bread delivery truck in Des Moines.

On July 15, 1966, he was united in marriage to Linda Frost at Oskaloosa. To this union four children were born. Larry and Linda later divorced.

He worked for many years as a plumber for H.G. Brown and Associates in Oskaloosa. In 2003, he went to work for Cunningham’s in Oskaloosa, he retired from there in April of 2009.

In retirement he enjoyed helping with his grandchildren’s race cars. He enjoyed going to the races, hunting, mushroom hunting and watching the Price is Right. He also enjoyed fishing locally, trips to Canada and trout fishing. He also enjoyed going to Michigan every year to open the family cabin.

His family includes his three children and their spouses: Julie and B.J. Carter, Shawn and Deb Surfus, and Tami and Mark Van Wyk, all of Oskaloosa; seven grandchildren: Jayce, Cayden and Brayton Carter, Cole and Clay Surfus, and Dylan and Trey Van Wyk; a sister and her husband: Judy and Jim Nicholson; a brother and his wife: Jr. and Barb Surfus of Oskaloosa; many nieces and nephews; his close friend and former wife, Linda Surfus; and his close friend Mike.

He was preceded in death by his parents and an infant daughter.

The family will be at the Bates Funeral Chapel on Monday, June 9, 2014, from 5:00 – 6:30 p.m. There will be a time of sharing at 6:30 Monday evening in the Bates Funeral Chapel.
As was Larry’s wish his body has been cremated. Burial of the urn will be at a later date in the Lewisburg Cemetery at Humeston, Iowa. The Bates Funeral Chapel is in charge of the arrangements.
Memorials may be made in his name.
