Lady Statesmen Lose Tight League Opener to Mount Mercy

Oskaloosa, Iowa –Two players posted at least 15 kills Wednesday, but it unfortunately was not enough to lift the William Penn volleyball squad over Mount Mercy, losing 3-1 in its Midwest Collegiate Conference opener.
The Lady Statesmen (4-5, 0-1 MCC) fell by scores of 23-25, 22-25, 25-22, 20-25.
The home team held leads in all four games, but only came out on top in the third set in spite of hitting just .190. The defense stepped up in that game, however, holding the Mustangs (5-5, 1-0 MCC) to a meager .088 clip.
William Penn actually outhit Mount Mercy .218-.214, including owning a night-best .317 mark in the opening game.
Brittany Rohling (Sr., Thayer, Kan., Neosho CC) warmed up as the evening wore on and finished with team highs in kills (17) and attack percentage (.382).
Lacey Taylor (Jr., Cedar, Iowa Western CC) was also strong, accounting for 15 points with a .375 clip.
Katie Rielly (Jr., Oskaloosa, Des Moines Area CC) just missed double figures with nine kills, while Christa Subbert (Sr., Stanton, Stanton HS) added eight and Katy Hingtgen (Sr., West Des Moines, Dowling Catholic HS) had seven.
Katherine Stumberg (Sr., Williamsburg, Kirkwood CC) finished with 33 assists and Alanna Connors (So., Libertyville, Ill., Libertyville HS) paced the defense with 19 digs.
At the net, Jeanette Cunningham (So., Mt. Orab, Ohio, Western Brown HS) tallied one solo block and five block assists.
Next: William Penn travels to Beloit, Wis. for the Beloit Buc Blast Tournament. On Friday, the Lady Statesmen face Ripon (Wis.) at 4:30 p.m. and Judson (Ill.) at 8:30 p.m. On Saturday, the squad meets Carroll (Wis.) at noon and then plays Ripon again at 2 p.m.
