Lady Statesmen Fall For First Time
Seward, Neb.–The William Penn women’s basketball team found out why Concordia (Neb.) is the top team in NAIA Division II Saturday afternoon, falling 79-56 to the Bulldogs in the conclusion of the Concordia Cattle Classic.
The Lady Statesmen (2-1) were outshot 42.0%-33.8%, but beat themselves the most in committing 26 turnovers.
The visitors led early, but did not stay on top long, trailing 44-33 at halftime. Both squads cooled off post-intermission, but Concordia (3-0) was a bit warmer in pulling away for the victory.
Katie Golomski (So., Milwaukee, Wis., Psychology) topped the navy and gold with 15 points, while Sarah Martin (Sr., Anthem, Ariz., Physical Education) joined her in double figures with 13 points.
Arielle McClellan (Sr., Los Angeles, Calif., Psychology) added eight points and Orielle Thomas (Sr., Waynesville, Mo., Physical Education) chipped in a half dozen. Thomas also racked up a team-best 11 rebounds, one more than the ten corralled by Taylor Reed (Sr., Kalamazoo, Mich., Communication). The Lady Statesmen walked off the floor with a 33-28 rebounding margin.
“We were right there with the #1 team for a large portion of the game,” Head Coach Mike Brown said. “Their maturity as a veteran team unfortunately just took over.”
“We are not moving and sharing the ball like we should and that hurt us today,” Brown added. “We also need more out of our scorers. We have a tough road ahead, so we need to make these adjustments quickly.”
