Join the City Band for an Evening of Music on the Square
The Oskaloosa City Band invites everyone to the square tonight at 8 p.m. for an evening of music. The band will play a wide variety of marches in preparation for next week’s Independence Day concert. This week’s marches include: “Billboard March”, “National Emblem”, “Colonel Bogey”, and “Big Four”.
The children will recognize the tune as the band plays “Hymn For A Child”. They will also hear a familiar Disney tune from Shrek 2 when the band plays “Accidentally In Love”.
“The Cowboys” is this week’s “fiery overture based on a western theme”. From the 1972 motion picture by the same name, this John Williams song may inspire thoughts of John Wayne, little cowboys, and the wild west.
“A Scottish Portrait” was written by James Swearingen, a C.L. Barnhouse composer. Travel to Scotland with the band for a few minutes and enjoy 3 Scottish folk tunes.
The concert will include several pieces arranged and composed by C.L. Barnhouse Co. Andy Clark arranged a beautiful rendition of “Gospel John” and Andrew Glover arranged two of the marches that will be played this evening.
Each week, the band plays a special song for birthday and anniversary celebrations. If you have someone you would like to recognize on Thursday night, hand a note to the director or another band member before the concert.
At the close of the concert, the band will play a tune that is becoming a new tradition. (Hint: “The Lawrence Welk Show” closing number…bubble blowing is encouraged)
Next week’s concert will be held on July 4th and will feature patriotic favorites. We’ll see you at the Bandstand!
